Does your phone support eSIM?

Most iPhones from the XS onward do, as do many recent Android phones. The phone must be carrier-unlocked. Quick check: in Settings, look for an option to add a cellular plan or eSIM.

When should you install it?

Install at home on stable Wi-Fi and turn data on after you land. That way you're not stuck at the airport in Bangkok trying to scan a QR code with no connection.
